Psy Responds To Billie Joe Armstrong’s ‘Herpes Of Music’ Jab: “I Kinda Like It”

K-pop superstar Psy is not easily insulted. Two days after Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong took to his Instagram account to compare Psy to the sexually transmitted disease herpes (“Once you think it’s gone, it comes back”), the “Gangnam Style” singer has responded in his customarily upbeat and comedic style.

“What is herpes?” Psy asked a Fuse correspondent regarding the comment. After briefly contemplating her definition, the singer remained nonplussed.

“I kind of like it,” he said. “It’s cool.” Addressing Armstrong directly through the camera (although it should be noted Psy seemed genuinely unaware of Armstrong or his band), his message was simple.

“I think it’s really cool,” he replied. “And I appreciate that. Thank you.”

When the South Korean singer stopped in on the TJ Show on 103.3 AMP Radio/Boston on Friday (May 10),  he did Armstrong one better and turned his comment into a positive.

“I know what that means exactly, herpes,” Psy said. “But the reason I thanked Billie Joe Armstrong is [because] he’s saying [I] ‘keep coming back.’ So in a good way or a bad way as a culture and musical product, which has that kind of addiction…it keeps coming back, I think. Which is good for my industry.”

Basically Psy just out English-ed a native English speaker and thanked Armstrong for proving he’s not a one-hit-wonder. And then he got a little dig of his own in.

“For later, the future, I might write a song called ‘Herpes’…collaborating with Green Day,” Psy joked.

Psy, who recently followed the massive “Gangnam Style” with the dance song “Gentleman,” performed the new tune at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on April 30, where he also met up with fellow Korean native Hyun-Jin Ryu, a starting pitcher for the team who presented the singer with an official jersey. Former Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, however, appeared to be less than impressed with Psy’s stadium performance.
