The neo-soul indie diva headlined the second night of the Crossing Brooklyn Ferry Festival at BAM, curated by Aaron and Bryce Dessner from the National, and let everyone know they were not excused from dancing. And we’re not just talking about swaying from side to side. No, Solange wanted to turn the concert hall into a junior high school dance.
Solange even called out a guy in the front row, shouting, “This fella in the white shirt, you are not exempt from grinding, baby!”
While Beyoncé won’t let professional photographers into her show for fears of an unflattering photo being taken, Solange wasn’t afraid to show a little sweat. Before the encore, Solange ran off stage and when she returned she let the crowd know that she wasn’t looking for a big applause or anything to bring her back out, she just needed a little breather. “I’m just an out of shape b****!” she said with a giggle.
Dressed in emerald green shorts and matching jacket, Solange opened the show with “Some Things Never Seem To F****** Work,” off her 2012 EP True. She seemed to dance the whole way through, urging all three tiers of the theater to join in. Luckily, her very fashionable band, which included her producer and collaborator, Dev Hynes (better known as Blood Orange), opted to follow her lead for a few choreographed hip hop-style line-dancing steps. We’ll assume these were taken from her days touring as a Destiny’s Child backup dancer.
Solange filled the night with hits from her current EP, including “Locked In Closets,” “Don’t Let Me Down,” “Lovers In The Parking Lot,” and “Bad Girls,” a ballad which showed off her range and gave the other Knowles a run for her money. However, it was “Losing You” though that finally got everyone up and out of their seats.
Solange updated some of her past R&B-tinged songs like “T.O.N.Y” and “Sandcastle Disco,” from 2009’s Sol-Angel and The Hadley St. Dreams, to sound more like her current (new wave and indie-tinged) style. She shouted out her home state of Texas with a new interpretation of Selena’s ballad “I Could Fall In Love,” and later turned the Dirty Projector’s “Stillness Is The Move” — a song she’s covered alongside the indie band — into a dancehall slow jam.
But there would be no covers of her sister’s well-known hits on this night. When one guy shouted out a request to hear Bey’s 2003 single, “Crazy In Love,” Solange simply responded, “Silence is golden.”
Now, that’s how Bey’s sister runs the world.
