When Adele took the stage to accept her GRAMMY for Best Pop Solo Performance earlier this year, she was almost upstaged by an overzealous fan. Now that stage-crasher is facing possible jail time.
The crasher, Vitalii Sediuk who is best known for earning a slap from Will Smith after kissing him on the red carpet at the Moscow premiere of Men In Black 3, has been charged with one count apiece of “willfully leaving a spectator area to go into a performance area and interfering and delaying program participants.”
“The safety and protection of both participants and attendees of major events held in this city is a priority of my office,” L.A. City Attorney Carmen Trutanich said in a statement obtained by E! News. “In this age of heightened security, any person who intentionally crosses that line and acts in an irresponsible manner will be held accountable for his or her actions.”
After the GRAMMYs, Sediuk revealed that he didn’t have a ticket to the awards show, but managed to walk into the Staples Center next to Katy Perry and sit in Adam Levine’s seat in the second row, which left the Maroon 5 frontman sitting on the floor for the first part of the show.
But thanks to Jennifer Lopez, who stopped Sediuk before he was able to get to the podium, the celebrity prankster was unable to steal Adele’s thunder. Seduik did say after he was arrested that night that he would never try to harm the 21 songstress.
“Adele is my favorite singer,” he said. “So when I heard her name, I came up with the idea to go up on stage… I pretended this was an award for me and then I said, ‘Thank you, Adele.’”
Sediuk’s arraignment is scheduled for May 31 in the Los Angeles Superior Court. If convicted, he could spend a maximum of six months in jail or face a $1,000 fine for each of the charges.
