Demi Lovato Goes Dark In ‘Heart Attack’ Video

“Putting my defenses up ’cause I don’t wanna fall in love/If I ever did that I think I’d have a heart attack,” Demi Lovato sings at the start of her new music video “Heart Attack.”

Shown in dark eye makeup as she glares at the screen, Lovato’s emotions are revealed in the power ballad. The mostly performance video directed by Chris Applebaum showcases two sides of Lovato. Alternating between wearing all black and all white, the dark and light elements demonstrate her inner battle of putting her defenses up.

“The song is about this kind of duality that Demi faces,” Applebaum told MTV News. “She’s singing about really wanting to fall in love. But then also really wanting to make sure she holds herself back a little bit, so she doesn’t get hurt. She constantly is singing about this duality throughout the song. It’s like a push and pull where we tried to metaphorically represent those two sides by having two metaphorically different sides of Demi.”

“When I don’t care I can play him like a Ken doll,” she sings. Later, her emotions change. “You make me glow but I cover up, won’t let it show.”

When she’s not performing, Lovato is seen dressed in all white as black paint begins to cover her up, a metaphor to demonstrate not wanting to get hurt as shown throughout her lyrics.

Applebaum said Lovato sang live during her music video taping, something he’s only seen done once before by Celine Dion.

“Demi is the real deal. People felt it when they were around her.”
