Tyrese Talks TGT And Why Tank Deserves A ‘Thank You’

Last year when Tyrese, Genuwine and Tank announced they would finally come together as a TGT, R&B fans rejoiced. While there were skeptics who have heard this song before, TGT actually released a single in February. But despite the complementary sounds on the track, there were plenty of competing voices behind the scenes.

Durring an interview with Radio.com, Tyrese took a break to thank Tank for his cooperation in what would become the single, “Sex Never Felt Better.”

“I’m gonna send Tank a Message right now…,” he said before taking a break to text. “We kinda went back and forth about what Tank’s verse should be on the song. These are conversations none of us have had before. Me, Genuwine or Tank have never been in a group.”

He went on to explain that his tweaks to the song, which he didn’t specifically outline, were not intended to make him shine.

“If you get all the screams and enegery for what happens, I don’t care,” Tyrese said. “I just want to do what’s best for the song. Tank was very excited about a version of the song he did. He was determined not to change it. He ended up going in to re-sing certain parts. I just had a moment to send him a text message to say thank you. No ego, no nothing. I know he went in there ’cause I damn near begged him to do it and he did it.”

Back in 2007, Tyrese, Genuine and Tank first announced that they would come together for a new group, TGT. They built anticipation with a remix of Tank’s “Please Don’t Go” and the promise of a “Shirts Off” tour in 2008. But due to label disputes and contract obstacles, the group disbanded before it got off the ground.

Now that they are together and signed to Atlantic Records they have had to find their writing process.

“The writing process is us just getting in the room and talking about songs and concepts and things that are age-appropriate,” Tyrese said. “A lot of times singers that may be a certain age may miss the mark trying to be young, trying to cater to a demo that has left. I’m a grown-ass man… I’m not going to dance. I’m not getting into shoulders. I’m gonna give them fingertips and the edge of these these pant leges. And we gonna keep it grown.”

Aside from his TGT project, Tyrese recently released a trailer (see below) to his forthcoming documentary about his life, Black Rose That Grew Through Concrete. He will be streaming the entire clip on Tyreseonline.com on March 31.
