In their latest video for “Why Am I The One,” GRAMMY winners fun. explore the indignities of being a suitcase. Or perhaps, the indignities of going on tour.
In a clever play on the lyric, “Why am I the one/always packing up my stuff” the group feature a vintage suitcase, humanized in a character with well placed silver hardware and duct tape, forgotten at the airport in Seattle. To cement the viewer’s empathy with the mistreated suitcase, it’s left on the street and splashed with mud by the band as they drive by in a black Town Car.
The song, a story of a never-ending break-up in which singer Nate Ruess questions why he’s constantly the person being forced away and coming back for more, portrays the kind of exhausted-but-committed and domesticated love few rom-coms are made of.
While the visuals take the journey of lost luggage very seriously, with cutaways to fun. very seriously singing along in dark, well-tailored suits — a wardrobe departure for the group who are well known for showing their ankles on stage, even in tuxes — the subject is a farce at the same time. Guitarist Jack Antonoff told MTV News, “It’s a very serious video that, on paper, might seem a little tongue-in-cheek, but at least the way it’s written, it’s meant to be pretty deep.”
After a year of traveling, playing festivals and dominating awards shows from the MTV Movie Awards to the GRAMMYs, fun. are the lost suitcase. They are the serious subject matter with a tongue-in-cheek underbelly.
For more fun. catch them with openers Tegan & Sara on their North American tour, kicking off in Toronto on July 6.
